    Cold Weather Rarely Kills a Car Battery. It Finds the Ones Summer Already Wore Out.

    Every fall it goes about the same way. The first morning the temperature drops into the thirties, somebody turns the key and gets a click, or that slow, dragging crank that sounds like the engine is thinking it over. The car started fine all summer. It started fine yesterday afternoon. So the cold gets the blame.

    Most of the time the cold did not do it. The cold is just where it showed up.

    On most of those batteries, the damage was done back in July and August, a little at a time, sitting under a hood in East Texas heat. There was nothing to see and nothing to feel. Then the first real cold front came through and asked the battery for power it did not have anymore.

    Some of them do not even make it that far. AAA answered about 1.8 million battery calls around the country in the summer of 2024 alone. The ones that limp through the summer are the ones that first cold morning finds.

    From the outside, a battery that is about to quit looks exactly like a good one. Same case, same terminals, same sticker. The only way to see what the heat did is to look inside, so we opened one up.

    Why does a battery die in the cold if the heat is what hurt it?

    Because heat does two things at once. It damages the battery, and it hides the damage while it does it.

    A car battery makes power with a chemical reaction between lead plates and acid, and heat speeds that reaction up. In the moment, that works in your favor. A warm battery puts out more than a cold one, and a warm engine turns over easy. Over a whole summer it works against you, because the same heat speeds up the reactions that wear a battery out. The positive plates corrode faster. Water leaves the acid faster. Neither kind of damage comes back.

    Consumer Reports, which tests around 150 car batteries a year in its lab, rates summer heat as harder on a battery than winter cold. Its battery life test runs at more than 167 degrees, because that is the kind of heat a battery can see under the hood in summer.

    So all summer long the battery is losing capacity it will never get back, and you never feel it, because summer is the easiest season there is to start a car.

    Then the weather turns, and two things happen on the same morning. According to AAA's research center, a battery at 32 degrees has lost about 35 percent of its strength. At the same time, cold oil is thick, and starting the engine can take up to twice as much current. Less supply, more demand. A battery that still had some margin in it last spring does not have it anymore, and the first cold start is where you find out.

    The battery did not die that morning. That was just the first morning it got asked for everything it had left.

    Around Tyler, the first frost usually lands around the middle of November, and the first cold front can beat it by a few weeks. If you read what we wrote about tire blowouts, this is the same story with a different part. The damage and the failure happen months apart, and the day it quits is only the day it ran out of room.

    Here is what that looks like when you open one up.

    What does the inside of a dead battery actually look like?

    This one died the way a lot of them do, and it is the thing I most wanted people to see.

    Every time a battery gets drawn on, and every time the charge goes down and comes back up, the plates give up a little of themselves. A tiny bit of material flakes off and settles to the bottom of the case as a brown sludge. The case has a pocket under the plates built to hold it, and for the first few years it does. But it keeps coming, a little at a time, with every start and every charge cycle. Eventually that sediment cakes up high enough to touch the bottom of the plates. When it does, it bridges them, the cell shorts out, and the battery is done. A battery that shorts this way can crank fine one afternoon and give you nothing the next morning, and there is no fixing it.

    That is what you are looking at in the video. Not one dramatic failure, but a few years of small ones piling up until they finally reached the plates.

    It is usually not alone in there. Three other things show up in most of the dead batteries we open, and each one points back to a different cause.

    Corroded positive plates. This is the heat damage. The positive plates are built on a lead grid that holds the material that stores the charge, and heat eats at that grid. Over time it gets brittle, it can swell and warp, and it loses its grip on the material it is supposed to hold. Every battery wears out this way eventually. Heat just moves the date up. It also loosens more material to fall into that pile at the bottom.

    A hard, whitish crust on the plates. That is sulfate. A battery makes some every time it discharges, and a normal charge turns it back. When a battery sits run down, gets drained and jumped, or only ever sees short trips around town, some of that sulfate hardens and never turns back. Every time that happens, the battery loses a little more of the plate surface it needs to make power.

    Plates that are not fully under the acid. Heat drives water out. On most batteries today there are no caps to check or top off, and any part of a plate that dries out quits working for good.

    None of that shows through the case. A battery can have all of it going on inside, with the sediment a fraction of an inch from the plates, and still sit in your engine bay looking clean, reading a normal voltage, and starting the car on a warm afternoon like nothing is wrong.

    My battery tested fine. Why did it still leave me stranded?

    Because the test most people get is a voltage check, and voltage does not tell you what you think it does.

    A fully charged battery sitting at rest reads about 12.6 volts. That tells you the battery is charged. It does not tell you how much it can deliver. A battery that has lost a big share of its plates to corrosion and sulfate can still charge up to a normal-looking 12.6, then fall flat the second the starter asks it for a few hundred amps.

    It is a lot like judging a truck by how it idles in the driveway. Everything sounds fine until you hook a trailer to it.

    It is the same trap as the temperature gauge that settles back to normal. A reading that looks right is not the same thing as a part that is healthy.

    The test that answers the real question puts a load on the battery. The traditional way pulls about half the battery's cold cranking amp rating for fifteen seconds and watches how far the voltage sags. At room temperature, a healthy battery stays above about 9.6 volts through that. A worn one drops right through it. Newer testers get to the same answer electronically by reading the battery's internal condition. Either way, you find out what the battery can do, not just what it is holding.

    There is one more trap, and it is seasonal. Batteries put out more when they are warm. A tired battery tested on a ninety-five degree afternoon is getting tested on its best day of the year. Good testers try to correct for temperature, but the margin you care about is the one you will have at six in the morning in November. A battery that comes back borderline in September is not a battery that is fine.

    Does driving around after a jump start recharge the battery?

    Not the way most people think.

    Your alternator is built to keep a healthy battery topped up while it runs everything else in the car. It is not built to bring a dead one back. Battery makers say so, and some alternator makers print a warning right on the box that their part is not designed to charge a dead battery.

    A drive across town after a jump puts back enough to maybe get you started next time. It does not put the battery back where it was. And every time a battery sits drained, more of that hard sulfate forms, and some of it stays. A battery that got jumped twice this summer is not the same battery it was in April, even if it seems fine today.

    If you do get a jump, two things should happen soon after. The battery needs a full charge from an actual charger, and somebody needs to figure out why it went dead. A battery that dies for no obvious reason is telling you about one of three things: its age, the charging system, or something drawing power while the car sits. Guessing which one is how people buy a new battery and end up on the shoulder of Loop 323 again a month later.

    How long does a car battery last in East Texas?

    Shorter than most people expect.

    AAA puts typical battery life at three to five years, and where you live decides which end of that you get. In the far northern states, batteries commonly go 58 months or more. In the most southern parts of the country, it is under 41 months. We live on the short end of that range.

    So if your battery turns three this fall, it is already in the window where a lot of them quit. That does not mean you throw it out on its birthday. It means you stop assuming it is fine and have it tested.

    Consumer Reports recommends a load test every year once a battery is two years old if you live somewhere warm. I think that is right for this part of Texas, and September is the month I would pick. The summer has already done whatever it was going to do, and the cold has not sent the bill yet. Back in June we put the battery on our summer checklist. This is the other half of that story.

    How to read the date on your battery. Look for a sticker or stamp on the top or side of the case. Most use one of two formats. The simple one is month and year, so 7/24 means July 2024. The other is a letter and a number. The letter is the month, A for January, B for February, and so on, with I skipped, and the number is the last digit of the year. G4 is also July 2024.

    When you buy a replacement, check that date before you pay. Consumer Reports recommends a battery made within the last six months, and within three if you can find one. A battery starts losing ground sitting on the shelf.

    What are the warning signs a battery is about to quit?

    Some batteries give you a heads up. Slow, lazy cranking. A click when you turn the key. Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev it. The battery light on the dash. A case that is swollen or bulging, which usually means it has been cooking. A rotten egg smell around the battery, which is a reason to have it looked at right away. Heavy, crusted corrosion on the terminals.

    But I want to be straight with you about this part. Plenty of batteries give you nothing. They crank fine on Tuesday and click on Wednesday, especially when the sediment in the bottom of the case finally reaches the plates and shorts a cell, like the one in the video. Waiting on a warning sign works right up until the day it does not.

    That is why the test matters more than the symptoms.

    What do we check when a battery comes in?

    At the shop on Highway 110, the battery is where we start, not where we stop.

    We test the battery for what it can actually deliver, not just the voltage it is sitting at. We check the charging system, because an alternator that is not keeping up will kill a brand new battery and make it look like the battery's fault. If a car keeps going dead overnight, we look for whatever is drawing power while it is parked. And we look at the terminals, cables, and hold-down. Corrosion chokes the connection, and AAA says excess vibration shortens battery life, so a battery rattling around in a loose tray is aging faster than it should.

    On a lot of newer vehicles there is one more step. Cars with a battery monitoring system keep track of the battery's age and condition and adjust how they charge it. When the battery gets replaced, the car has to be told. Skip that step and some of them keep charging the new battery as if it were the worn-out one. It is a quick job with the right equipment, and an easy one to miss with a parts store battery and a wrench.

    Heat does most of the damage. High temperatures speed up plate corrosion and water loss inside a battery, and that lost capacity never comes back.     Only partly. Alternators are designed to keep a charged battery topped up, not to restore a deeply discharged one. After a jump, the battery should get a full charge from a proper charger and a real test, and the reason it went dead should be found.
